Link Love: #15 Ruby and Joy

September 23rd, 2010

Today on the blog we have a lovely business called Ruby and Joy who do amazing things with flowers. Their attention to detail shows through in the beautiful bridal bouquets and event styling they have produced. So here I hand you over to Nicola, for a few words about Ruby and Joy,

‘rubyandjoy discover and display the most beautiful blooms, lush foliage, exotic berries and succulents to ensure a fresh and fragrant atmosphere at your personal or corporate event.

Attention to detail ensures a lasting impression, be it by styling with simplicity or abundance, and finding beauty in all diverse and unique arrangements. With a history of styling for chic magazines, rubyandjoy can work with you to create the ultimate feel for any occasion.

With fresh ideas and gorgeous blooms, rubyandjoy aim to capture a moment, believing that flowers have the power to add that essential element to any occasion.’

Flowers, Wedding Bouquets, Florist, Blooms, Event Stylists

and here is a little about Nicola herself:

1). What’s your favourite way to relax at the weekend?

Probably to sleep in! After many early mornings at the markets it’s always absolute heaven to lie in. But I also love weekend markets, catching up with friends and sometimes (if feeling really adventurous) bushwalking.

2). Favourite restaurant?

Ooh this is tricky. I have a few favourite cafes, but it’s more the people I catch up with at these places that make them favourites. Thyme Square in Hornsby does the best mashed potato (very important), and Kirribilli Woodfire Kitchen does the best takeaway pizzas. Ever.

3). What book are you reading at the moment?

Not reading anything at the moment unfortunately! I’ll need to plan a holiday so I can read to my hearts content!

4). What did you last go and see at the cinema?

The last movie I saw at the cinema was Inception which I though was both brilliant and mind numbingly confusing. But also watched Whip It on dvd on the weekend and loved it!

5). What is your favourite wedding story?

Oh my goodness, I have so many! I’m pretty easy though, any story of true love gets me.

Become a fan of our deliciously delightful facebook page

Or follow us on our equally scrumptious blog called Lovely Pretty Cheery Things

Thanks Nicola, yes I LOVED Inception too ;)

Wedding Invitations- Where to Start?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Your wedding invitation should be considered with much thought and above all it should reflect you, your style and your wedding day. Wedding invitations are no longer simply a functional and necessary way of inviting your guests to your wedding but are a work of art, that will be treasured by you and your guests for years to come.

It can, however, be quite overwhelming for a bride and groom to go about designing their wedding invitations and so I have suggested a few things below, to get you started. This way, when you go to buy your invitations or get a stationer, such as mini Moko to design them, you’ll have a clear idea in your mind’s eye of what you’d like.

Developing a theme: The theme of your wedding invitations will help to inform the design. Often a theme will be determined by the type of wedding you are having such as a garden wedding or a beach wedding.  You can easily see how these types of weddings could inform the design of you invitations.

It may be related to the season of the year that you are getting married in or a vintage styled wedding or based on a style of art or architecture such as art nouveau.

There are many ways of developing a theme but if you are really stuck for ideas you could talk this through with a wedding stationery designer to help you formulate a theme unique to you.

Choosing Colours: A favourite way of choosing your wedding invitation colours is by incorporating the colour of your bridesmaid dresses. Or you could choose your bridesmaid dresses according to your wedding invitation colours!

Often simple objects such as beads, buttons, fabric, paper,  ribbon or a image from a magazine will catch your eye and inspire you. You can take these to a stationery designer who’ll be happy to colour match them for you.

Here at mini Moko we offer a colour customisation service to make the process easier for you. Our colour charts have over 100 colours to choose from and are printed on two different cardstocks. You can purchase these online to help you colour match and get a good idea of what the colour you had in mind really looks like.

Also, with our existing wedding stationery collections, you can select a design you like and then, simply select colours from the chart that you would like for your wedding invitations to match your wedding day.

Invitation Size: If you are having your invitations designed for you, it is important to consider the size and shape. Firstly, remember that you will be putting your invitations into envelopes and therefore the size of your invitations will be governed by what envelope sizes are available. There are a wide variety of envelope shapes and sizes and so this certainly shouldn’t restrict your design, however it is best to get this clear from the beginning so that you are not disappointed.

Another good tip is to keep your invitations under 5mm in thickness and 250g in weight or you’ll find your postage costs higher.

Having had your wedding invitations designed, it should be an easy process to have the rest of your wedding stationery, such as order of service, place cards, menus and thank you cards co-ordinated in their design to the theme of you invitations.

Fab Find #12: Cherry Blossom Wedding Invitation

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Spring was certainly in the air here in Melbourne this weekend and you can see everyone is perking up a little too – yey! I love Spring, it is my favourite season of the year and what a fantastic season for a wedding. Each season brings with it an abundance of beautiful flowers and Springs best (in my humble opinion at least) has to be the cherry blossom. Inspired by the beauty of cherry blossom and these stunning photographs, I designed a wedding invitation based on these beautiful flowers as you can see below. Here the wedding invitation is shown in a delicate pink and contrasting soft muted brown. The wedding invitation is part of a collection at mini Moko that continues the cherry blossom design throughout completing a beautiful set of stationery for your wedding day. It comes in several other colours too, but should you wish to match it to colours specific to your day, why not use mini Moko’s colour customisation service.

Cupcake Wrapper, Wedding, Birthday Party, Baby Shower, Kitchen Tea, Celebration

and here are just a few questions to give you an idea of what the girls get up to when having a little fun:

1). What’s your favourite way to relax at the weekend?

Natalie & I usually start the weekend with a lovely after-school champers on Friday arvo!  Our four girls have a play together so we have a quiet drink and go over what we have done for the week and what goes onto our to-do list for next week.

Saturdays is always spent doing their swimming lessons followed by an arvo in the kitchen cooking up a storm! Cooking is a way of unwinding for me so I love either cooking up an old favourite or flipping through the latest cooking mags or my old recipe books for inspiration.  My 4 year old loves to help in the kitchen so we spend quite a bit of time in there.

We love having an open fire and a cosy family dinner, followed by some footy on the tv or a dvd.

Alternatively I will grab a glass of vino and pore over the latest magazines.  My faves are UK Living Etc, UK Elle Decoration, Inside Out, Real Living, Home Beautiful, Delicious, and the new Masterchef magazine or even a fashion fix with UK Elle or UK Vogue.

Sundays are usually super relaxed around here.  More cooking, odd jobs, updating songs on the ipod, playing with the kids.

2). Favourite restaurant?

Living in Melbourne we are spoilt for choice!

Locally One Thai restaurant in East Balwyn. Or an old fave my Dad first took me to about 25 years ago Golden Orchid in China Town – the best satay in Melbourne!

Otherwise I love Donovans, Taxi, Svago

3). What book are you reading at the moment?

Don’t seem to have enough time to read these days.  Recently I went away with some girlfriends so I had no excuse.  I indulged in some ‘light’ reading, The Carrie Diaries by Candice Bushnell. A good bit of fluffy holiday reading!

4). What did you last go and see at the cinema?

Natalie & I took our girls to see Toy Story 3 in 3D this morning – very good – goggles and all!

Did see Sex & The City II the other though too.  And…I liked it…sshhh!

5). What is your favourite wedding story?

It would have to be my own!

After patiently waiting for 7 (yes 7) years my now husband finally proposed on Christmas Eve.

I was so dumbfounded and tired of waiting I didn’t actually believe him!

After the proposal in December, we wasted no time and were married in April.

Having been a Martha fan for many years, she had ‘helped’ me plan the perfect wedding.

I still hang on to all those Martha magazines and my wedding planner folder is still one of my prized possessions!

A fabulous day that our friends still say was the best wedding ever!
We just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary!

Thanks so much for the insights, it sounds like you have developed a great work/life balance!

Fab Find #8: Stationery Stationary Tote

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I had to chuckle when I came across these totes on Etsy recently. When I first started out in the stationery business, it would really irritate me when someone mispelt stationery, however over time I have just learnt to not let it bother me so much. You can purchase one of these handy bags from Sapling Press shop on Etsy.

Guest Seating Charts

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

At mini Moko, we have recently increased our wedding stationery product range. This is really exciting for all you lovely brides out there because it means that if you fall in love with one of our designs you will also be able to get bon bon tags, menu cards, table numbers and guest seating charts too. We have been designing these for brides for a while now, but only recently have we included them in our online wedding collections.

The one product in this selection that I think really adds something special to your wedding reception is the guest seating chart. After trying many different shapes and sizes according to what some of my customers have requested, I have found that the A1 size chart works the best. They look stunning either simply mounted on board or for an extra special touch, framed and inserted into an artists easel. They are great when they are positioned by the entrance, helping guests to be orientate themselves immediately upon arrival. In fact having one either side of the entrance door is the icing on the cake!!

Guest Seating Plan, Wedding Stationery, Classic Mongram Stationery, Black

These guest seating charts work really well in conjunction with the rest of our wedding reception stationery including place cards, menu cards, table numbers and bon bon tags. So now you can have you wedding stationery matching all the way through from your wedding invitations at the beginning to your thankyou cards at the end!!

Oh and if you find a design that you love in our shop, but you can’t find the product, don’t worry it just means I haven’t had a chance to upload it yet. Therefore simply contact us and I’ll immediately sort it out for you!
